Log In Sign Up.With merchant services provider Cayan firmly under its umbrella, Total System Services is prepared to venture deeper into retail acquiring and processing through Cayan's omnichannel Genius platform.
TSYS has provided payment processing and other services for small-business clients across many verticals, with its strongest emphasis on salons, wellness and health, including practices from dental to veterinary, and a growing business in field services, charity and education.
Cayan has done that. Cayan co-founder and CEO Henry Helgeson has developed a reputation in the payments industry for keeping his company and its staff ahead of the technology curve. It was a significant factor in TSYS' due diligence to make an acquisition pitch to a company it felt could help technology development in the future.
Helgeson will remain president of Cayan and report directly to McHugh. Still, TSYS made the move to acquire Cayan to also obtain the merchant services provider's skill at nurturing client relationships. Large processors have dealt with acquisitions that shift client bases in the past, and McHugh doesn't foresee issues with merchants processing with TSYS moving forward.
The acquisition of Cayan comes on the heels of Columbus, Ga. January 15,a.

The coronavirus is putting payments IT projects into hyperdrive. But the movement to scale, especially through an acquisition, has not been without its challenges, said McHugh, amid integration tasks and in interactions with analysts and others who all struggled to say what TSYS is really good at — and where it was going to make its mark as a payments provider for the merchant industry.
The pushback from naysayers has focused on the competition — namely, for example, that First Data, Worldpay and Bank of America are bigger, and Square and Stripe are faster. When looking for firms to acquire, TSYS looks at, and will continue to look at, technology, ease of integration and verticals that remain untapped. Cayan is the company behind Genius, a cloud-based platform that integrates payments processing, acceptance and tokenization services.
The broad strategy here, he told Webster, is one where, admittedly, no gateway does it all. Stripe may be known for being the best in terms of ease of integration, while Adyen is known for its global coverage. But with any gateway, he said, many questions must be answered. Among those questions: How easy is the technology to integrate for developers, and are application programming interfaces APIs easy to work with?
Are the technology offerings broad enough to be deployed across in-store and online use cases? Is the tech stack robust enough to scale? The Cayan acquisition is helping TSYS boost efforts in retail, healthcare and in the salon and wellness verticals. Complexity — in a world where the lines between payment companies and independent software vendors ISVs are blurring — demands product development that understands the nuances and layers inherent in those transactions, he said.
If integrated payments are viewed as a wave of the future, opportunity lies in green fields for TSYS, as companies realize they need a strong technology partner that can provide payments services on their behalf — enabling payments without having to manage all the details. Two years out, the company is likely to see a landscape where a larger percentage of its business will be a software solution and not a processing solution, said McHugh, even though he said TSYS has developed a platform that makes processing a core competence that delivers growth and margins.
