Side-by-side shotguns are light and wonderfully elegant hunting guns; fine representatives of the good old days. The side-by-side arrangement of the barrels is a classical design principle of hunting guns ā€” this principle has been applied in Suhl since the early days.

Even if the Merkel brothers were more committed to the over-and-under gun at the start, the Merkel philosophy was soon devolved to the traditional side-by-side gun. Besides the classical barrel hook, Suhl soon adopted the cross bolt developed by William Greener ā€” which represented gunmaking at its finest. Merkel maintains the elegance and optical lightness of these shotguns by consistent adherence to traditions.

The individually adapted receivers also play a role. Three different receivers are manufactured for the three calibres on offer ā€” calibre-adapted. Am I correct and could any one give me some further insight to this shotgun? Pictures are a google photo share in the following link. The Huberttus name is quite well known but I have never looked at it particularly. No doubt someone with more knowledge than I will be along shortly.

Hubertus was the trademark of Imm. Looks like the actual maker's marks have been worked off to disguise the actual Liege mechanic who made it. On the water-table across from the serial number there are some remnants of the mechanic's initials.

I will add images of the stock, the butt-plate is rubber and completely blank. That shotgun is very similar but where the stock meets the receiver does not look the same. The name "Heym" is synonymous with British best quality shotguns. In short, they don't come much, if any, better. OG is correct about the proofs, typical German. I don't know what you know so I'll just tell you what I see. Excelsior Witten is who made the barrel steel, the "Crown over U" is a proof for a double charged proof with black powder, the "Crown over W" means the barrels are choked but not how tight the choke is or isn't.

The "Crown over S" is the stamp for smoothbore barrels. I don't see the "Crown over N" stamp for Nitro proof nor can I see exactly what is on the sides of the barrels, just above the barrel flats. I suspect somewhere in that is "Nitro Proofed". If it is in block letters the gun was proofed in Suhl. If in script it was proofed in Zella-Mehlis.

Everything OldGuns said holds true.

I'm much more of a rifleman and don't know a lot about the value of your double gun. Given what OG mentioned and I see I would suspect at least two thousand dollars. I think it's a bit unfair that German guns of the quality of yours don't command the same prices as the British guns because they're every bit as good.

With the shotguns too, steel is interlocked against steel and the Merkel top-down principle is applied. Thus the receiver of a side-by-side shotgun is constructed in such a way that it can withstand the same gas pressure as a Safari rifle. The triumphal procession of Merkel over-and-under guns started with the series in the s. A gun with a long tradition ā€” but free from preciousness. The series was re-engineered in and then ā€” in homage to the outgoing millennium ā€” renamed the series.

From an historical viewpoint, this was the first time that Merkel combined handwork with industrial processes, gunmaking culture with series precision in one class of gun. The individual parts for this series have always been manufactured in the Merkel high-precision parts department. The main difference to the series is that series over-and-under guns are made with a boxlock. Only the flagship of the series traditionally has sidelocks. This classic lock is highly functional and offers maximum reliability.

This derives from the puristic simplicity of the design. All the functional parts are accommodated in the receiver, and no compromises are made where aesthetics are concerned. At Merkel each calibre has its own dimensioned steel receiver, which makes for perfect optical harmony from the barrel to the action calibre-adapted receiver.

And the slim line can be perfectly rounded off by selecting the matching three-piece forearm ā€” distinguishable by its finely engraved screws.

A stock mounted in three parts enables more elegant forearm forms than a onepiece, which has to fit over the lower barrel. Similarities with the series: in terms of individualisation the series does not fall short of its fine sister.

Every finishing stage is offered by Merkel ā€” through to the individual engraving of long side plates. The over-and-under combination guns and over-and-under rifles of the series are equipped with the Merkel Duo manual cocking system.

This allows the two locks to be cocked immediately before the shots are fired using the manual cocking system, or alternatively cocking via the barrels, and thus rapid following shots. The muzzle adjustment horizontal and vertical of the over-and-under double rifle is technical treat. This unique and complex Merkel system functions via a thread-adjustable slot wedges. This enables the gunmaker to finely adjust the barrels ā€” without stressing the hard and soft solder joints.

The over-and-under shotgun series has a long hunting tradition and has achieved a great deal of sporting success. Besides the dominant 12 calibre, Merkel also makes lightweight shotguns in the series. The 20 caliber is characterised by its light weight, excellent responsiveness and comfortable recoil. For centuries the city of Suhl in Thuringia, Germany has been a gunmaking center.

It is not the only place in Germany where best guns have been made, but Suhl is certainly where much fine German gunmaking has taken place. It could probably be called the birthplace of the German best gun with reasonable accuracy.

The fall of the Iron Curtain and the subsequent reunification of Germany have sparked a modern renaissance in Suhl. Suhl is the location of the Guild of Master Gunsmiths and the gunsmith's technical school, the only German training center for engraving. German shotguns have been well regarded in North America for a long time.

For instance, before the beginning of the First World War the top grade Lefever shotguns, among the finest guns ever made in America, were available with Krupp fluid steel barrels. Around the same time fine Charles Daly brand shotguns were being imported from Germany and garnered a very good reputation.

These were regarded as some of the finest guns of their day and they still are. Charles Daly guns were made primarily by the Prussian firms of H. Linder, Heym and J. These were best quality European guns made to American specifications for American shooters. The importation of Charles Daly and all other German made guns ceased with the onset of W. II and with it the most positive and visible connection between German manufacturers and American shooters.

It was to be many years before a connection was reestablished and the American shooters' acceptance of German best shotguns has never been completely restored. Working hard to rectify that situation are my friends at Merkel USA, the importers naturally of fine German made Merkel shotguns www.

The House of Merkel has been an autonomous company in Suhl since and Merkel shotguns were highly regarded in North America before the war. Needless to say, building best guns was never a Communist priority and, at least in the West, Merkel best guns virtually disappeared.

The fall of the Soviet Union and the reunification of Germany brought freedom to the people of East Germany and Merkel, the only major gunmaker in Suhl today, is again making best guns for sale in the U. Merkel is the only manufacturer in the world that produces sidelock shotguns completely in-house.

All are formed from forged steel. Merkel model designations vary with gauge and are a little difficult to fathom, but basically the guns imported by Merkel USA use the 47 and number series for both 12 and 20 gauge guns. Locking is accomplished by double under bolts and a Greener top fastener. Barrels are made from cold hammer forged steel with demibloc construction and a solid rib. Automatic selective ejectors and an automatic safety are standard on all models, as is a moderate amount of arabesque scroll engraving and a hand rubbed oil wood finish.

Standard options include gauge, barrel length and choke, stock type English or pistol grip and double or single triggers. Luxury wood, elaborate engraving, inlays of precious metals, stock carving and interchangeable barrels are available for all models.
